Rapid Three-Dimensional Myelin Water Fraction Imaging of the Cervical Spinal Cord
نویسنده
چکیده
INTRODUCTION: The ability to non-invasively and quantitatively assess myelin content in the spinal cord would improve our understanding of a variety of spinal cord-related conditions, as well as enhance our ability to differentially diagnose, treat and monitor them. Currently, little is known about the pathology of myelin in spinal cord disease due to the technical challenges of measuring myelin noninvasively. Multi-component relaxometry can be used to estimate the myelin water fraction (MWF), which has been shown to relate to myelin content. However, imaging a single slice takes between 15 and 25 minutes using conventional multiple-echo spin-echo based techniques (though recent advancements have increased the coverage to 4 or 5 useable 5-mm axial slices). Moreover, these spin-echo methods are sensitive to the in-flow affects of cerebral spinal fluid and off-resonance conditions associated with the multiple airtissue and bone-tissue interfaces and respiratory motion.

Cervical cord myelin water imaging shows degenerative changes over one year in multiple sclerosis but not neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder
Spinal cord pathology is a feature of both neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) and relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (MS). While subclinical disease activity has been described in MS using quantitative magnetic resonance imaging measures, current evidence suggests that neurodegeneration is absent between relapses in NMOSD, although most evidence comes from brain studies. We aime...
متن کاملRadiation Induced Demyelination in Cervical Spinal Cord of the Head and Neck Cancer Patients after Receiving Radiotherapy
Background: Cervical spinal cord is important and radiosensitive. It is the most critical organ for the head and neck (H&N;) cancer patients during radiotherapy. If the delivered dose to the cord is more than tolerance dose, demyelination may occur. Objective: Current study aims to analyze the post radiotherapy status of cord in the H&N; cancer patients.Material and Methods: In this a...
متن کاملAssessing structure and function of myelin in cervical spondylotic myelopathy: Evidence of demyelination.
PURPOSE To assess the extent of demyelination in cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) using myelin water imaging (MWI) and electrophysiologic techniques. METHODS Somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) and MWI were acquired in 14 patients with CSM and 18 age-matched healthy controls. MWI was performed on a 3.0T whole body magnetic resonance scanner. Myelin water fraction (MWF) was extracted ...

Introduction Myelin water imaging has been successfully used to assess myelin content in human and animal CNS tissue [1,2]. It has been shown that fractional amounts of water trapped between myelin sheaths – the so called myelin water fraction (MWF) [3] correlates well with the amount of myelin in a rat model of spinal cord injury (SCI) [2] and can therefore be an important marker of the cord p...
